Tone Nga Chang Waterfalls Hatyai

Tuesday, February 10, 2015

Such a majestic waterfall that has seven levels. Located at Thung Tam Sao, Hat Yai District, Songkhla 90110. Google map click here. You should spend your one day to tour the seven falls. Nature trailing is very fun and you can also enjoy the fish feeding here. About 1 hour from the downtown of Hatyai, traveling for 13 kilometers Rattaphum Road then turn left at Ban Hu Rae, the nearest landmark is Seven Eleven for another 13 kilometers. It is best to have your own vehicle or you can hire a "tuk tuk"  and ask the driver for a discount, 300 - 400 baht one way and ask him to pick you up for another 300 - 400.

Since it's part of Thai culture that pricing may defer from locals and foreigners. This place is expensive for "farangs" foreigners, entrance is 200 baht for non-Thai and just 20 baht for locals. if you have your own vehicle, you should pay a parking fee, say for instance for motorcycle, locals pay only 20 baht and foreigners pay 50 baht. Parking fee defers for car, van, bus, etc.

The Tone Nga Chang Wildlife Sanctuary is about 1 kilometer from the highway. But this is not a tourist destination. They have their office inside the Tone Nga Chang Resort. They are responsible for taking care or preserving the nature.

We are not locals but we can act like locals since we have same features as Thai people. We will just give our 500 baht in the entrance booth and they will charge at the same price as Thai people. We just avoided the asking and talking session, assuming that we are locals. But for those "farangs" foreigners that cannot assume or obviously not locals, you cannot get away from their expensive entrance. You will really pay 200 baht per person.

Guest houses are available from 800 to 1500, no need to pay for entrance. Check-in is 12:00 noon to 12:00 noon on the next day. We rented one of the guest house for 1500 good for 20 people (picture above). Have 2 big bedrooms with beddings, 2 toilets, terrace but no kitchen and no kitchen sink. You can get a reservation online, this is their contact number: 074 231 055.

We stayed in one of their vacation house for only 1500 a day. If you stay at their vacation house the entrance is free, you don't have to pay. We were told to come before 7 in the evening because they will close the gate after 7 in the evening.

Early morning around 6:00 in the morning, we started nature trail, hiking up to the seven falls. Usually, most of the tourist go nature trailing up to the second falls. But our team decided to go up to the seven falls. The way to seven falls is very difficult and very hard to climb, but at least we manage by helping each other.

The 2nd Falls
We reached the 2nd falls very exhausted, so tired as if I'm going to die. But our team went up, the road is more difficult to climb and rocky hill. We climb up to the hill, they said a "farang" white American take a selfie photo and unfortunately, he fell from a high cliff. My muscles are shaking upon hearing the story, looking down from where I stand, it's very high. They already put the warning sign on the place of the accident.

The third waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls of southern Thailand. The stream is separated into two and it's very high, resembling an elephant tusk that's why they named it "Tone Nga Chang" meaning elephant tusk.

6 of the 7 falls
This is our last destination, we reach this place around 9:00 in the morning. This is very far but all the effort and energy we used from reaching this place has been paid off. Only a few people got here because it's very far and the trail is hard to climb. The majestic, truly wonderful waterfalls laid in front of our eyes. Our team has already reached up, they are very tiny from where I stand. I did climb up, they swim in the pool like a stream. From where I stand, you can see the seven falls, about 30 meters from the six falls.

Note: Close at 7:00 in the evening.

Below is just a funny clip from one of the most beautiful waterfalls of southern Thailand.
