How To Travel Hatyai To Penang?

Sunday, December 2, 2018

If you are planning to go to Penang to get a VISA. There are two ways to travel to Penang Malaysia from Hatyai. You can travel by van for 380 - 400 baht. Just buy a ticket from the travel Agency around  Hatyai. Usually, we buy a ticket at Hatyai SB Travel and Tour. It is near Lee Garden Plaza and in front of  Central Plaza. Located at Soi Prachathipat Hatyai Songkhla. You can contact their phone number #074261712 for more inquiries. They can speak English well. The van from Hatyai will send you directly to your hotel accommodation in Penang.

Your second option is via train. You can buy a ticket on the train station or online at https://www.busonlineticket.co.th/ Starting from Hatyai Railway Station, the train will depart 2 times a day. You can travel at 7:30 in the morning and 1:05 in the afternoon going to Padang Besar Train Station. A passenger train costs 70 baht and travel time is more than 30 minutes.

From Padang Besar, after passing the immigration officer. You need to buy another ticket at the ticket booth. Remember to change your baht to ringgit in Hatyai City before riding a train from Hatyai Station. There is no money changer at Padang Besar Train Station. The train departs from Padang to Butterworth Station every hour. The ticket costs 11.4 ringgit or 90 baht and travel time is more or less 3 hrs.

From The Butterworth Station take the exit sign. You will see a sign going to a ferry boat. The fare is 2 ringgit or more than 20 baht and travel time is 15 minutes. When you reach Penang Port it's near George Town. You can just walk to reach your hotel. You can also ride and find the bus stop A-B of Penang, which will go anywhere in Penang. You can also ask the staff there on which bus will you take to reach your hotel. The fare is not so expensive.

Going back to Hatyai. You can also take a van for the same price 38 ringgit. You can buy at your travel agency or on your hotel information desk. If you do your visa at Banana Travel and Tours. I recommend you to buy your ticket there. Since you will have to wait for your visa there.

If you want to take the train again. You can take a ferry for free. You don't have to pay. The train departs hourly from Butterworth Train Station to Padang Besar for 11.4 ringgits or 90 baht. The train from Padang Besar to Hatyai only departs 2 times a day. Train number 948 leaves Padang Besar daily at 9:55 am (Malaysian Time) arriving in Hatyai at 9:50 am (Thailand Time). Train number 950 leaves Padang Besar daily at 4:40 pm (Malaysian Time) Arriving in Hatyai at 4:35 pm (Thailand Time).

You probably won't catch up with this time table. When you reach Padang Besar and no train schedule going to Hatyai. You can just take a motorcycle from the train station to the Padang Besar border. Ask him to wait for you have to queue to get a stamp on your passport. They will ask you to pay 50 baht or more. You can negotiate with them. Then the van going to Hatyai from Padang Besar cost 50 baht. There will be van service until 5:30 in the afternoon and travel time is 1 hour.

I recommend you take a van going back to Hatyai because you probably won't catch with these train schedules. Since the passport will be given at 2:00 to 3:00 in the afternoon. Most of us take the train going to Penang and take a van going back to Hatyai. You will reach Hatyai late in the evening. Travel time from Hatyai to Penang and vice versa via van is more or less 4 hrs and cost 35 ringgit. All fare price is subject to change.
