Loy Krathong Festival is celebrated annually in Thailand. It happens every full moon of November where the water in the river and in Klong (canal) is higher than usual. Since I came here in Thailand, I never miss a chance to celebrate it. Thailand didn't declare it as a non-working holiday so usually, at night we go home around 9 in the evening because there's still work on the next day.
My first year in Thailand, we celebrated the Loy Krathong festival in now closed Hatyai Floating Market. That time the Hatyai Floating Market is still newly opened but because of some circumstances, it is now closed. My second and third year here, we celebrated it at Hatyai Municipal Park.
Two years ago, we celebrate the Loi Krathong at Hatyai Municipal Park. It rains a little but it stops around 8 o'clock. The super moon appears that night but it was a little bit covered by the clouds. Then when we were about to go home. We notice that a lot of people entering the Hatyai Science and Astronomy Center. You can celebrate it in many areas in Hatyai and Songkhla. Most people come to Hatyai Municipality Park, Klong Hae Floating Market, Ban Phru Floating Market and any other klong (canal) near the temple all over Hatyai and Songkhla. Whenever you choose to go, all of these places are very crowded. Sometimes it hard to park a car because all of the parking lot is full.
Many tourists from Singapore and Malaysia come here to celebrate it. You have to make Kratong or buy it for as low as 20 baht. It depends on how beautiful the Krathong is. Then you make a wish or pray and put it on the river or klong. Many schools all over Thailand have a simple celebration in school where the student make colorful Krathong. It helps the students showcase their ideas and creativeness.
This year we went to Klong Hae Floating Market to celebrate it. I think this is the best place to celebrate Loi Krathong Festival. Like Hatyai Municipal Park, It also has a stage where the students perform something like traditional dance and a puppet show. The lights and the performance is spectacular. Though It is really hard to park a car here and the place is so crowded. It is still so good to come here on Loi Krathong Festival.
Don't forget to bring your mosquito repellent. You can buy it at 7 11. This time of the year, the Chikungunya is a common decease. It's a disease that comes from a bite of mosquitoes. Enjoy the festival and be safe.
