History of Tha Phae Gate which you can read in the park;
This Gate, located on the eastern wall of the city, dates back to the year 1296 when King Mangrai founded Chiang Mai. It was originally known as Chiang Ruak Gate after the nearby village of Chiang Ruak. At that time, The Phae (raft landing) was the name given to the gate in the outer eastern rampart of the city neat Wat Saen Fang, in the course of time, the name changed. Towards the end of the 19th Century. The gate in the eastern rampant became known as "Outer The Phae Gate". While Chiang Ruak Gate in the city wall called "Inner Tha Phae Gate". The outer gate was later dismantled and the remaining inner gate gradually became known for short as "Tha Phae Gate".
The present Tha Phae Gate was rebuilt in 1985 - 1986 on the basis of historical and archaeological evidence including a photograph of one of the city gates taken in 1899. The reconstruction was done by the Chiang Mai Provincial Office, the Chiang Mai Municipality and the Fine Arts Department in collaboration with Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mae Teachers College and a group of dedicated private citizens.
